Hyderabad: Fire accidents are unpredictable and can start suddenly and spread quickly, causing damage to your home and belongings as well as putting lives at risk. Fire accidents can happen in many ways, but there are some simple steps you can take to prevent them from occurring.

One can always be cautious by following the basic steps. If you have installed a heater then make sure that the heater is kept well protected, especially from open flames or you can buy portable heaters that come with a built-in guard that provides extra protection.

Keep portable heaters and candles away from furniture and curtains. There is a high chance of fire if they come in contact with each other.

Fires most commonly occur in the kitchen, so it is advisable to never leave pans unattended and if there are children around, keep matches and lighters out of their reach.

Tips to follow

• There is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning if you are using a generator. Make sure you are using the generator wisely and keep an eye on it from time to time

• Make sure to switch off and unplug all unnecessary electrical appliances before leaving home for short-term work or vacation.

• In case of a power outage, make sure you switch off or disconnect any appliances (e.g. sandwich maker, mixer grinder) or any electronic devices.

• It is advisable to leave a light on so you will know when the power comes back

• Make sure to install some smoke detectors in the house

• If you have a multi-storey building, install smoke detectors on every floor of your home

• Avoid using candles unsupervised or carelessly

• If you have BBQ grills in your home, keep them at least 10 feet away from the house

• Try not to disable smoke detectors

• Avoid smoking indoors
