Hyderabad: Monsoon in India doesn’t just mean welcoming relief from the heat. This adds the added challenge of tight living spaces and this season means fighting damp, moisture, and mold in almost everything in the home.

Books are also one of those valuable items, especially for those readers whose world completely revolves around books. For many people, their book collection is a priceless one that they want to protect and care for for years to come and many even consider their collection of reading materials as their heritage.

Therefore, it hurts when one fails to take care of them and protect them from the vagaries of the weather, especially during the rainy season. In such a situation, you can donate those books which are not needed. This way, the books can reach the people who will actually use them and this can become the basis for recycling those books.

However, for those who do not want to give up their book collection, which they consider to be the window to the world, here are some tips for ensuring and keeping your library and book stores safe.

• Books should be kept in a dry environment. Make sure to store books in a moisture-proof environment to protect them from a variety of conditions.

• Try not to place book shelves near leaky windows, walls and doors, where there is a risk of leakage.

• If you have a large collection of books, keep a dehumidifier in your study room or your customized library. The dehumidifier checks the moisture level.

• In case of small shelves, silica gel sachets can be used.

• It is a myth that only water can spoil book pages, direct sunlight can also spoil your books. When exposed to direct sunlight the leaves turn brown and brittle.

• Clearing the shelves and rearranging the space is also advised. This ensures that books are being circulated.

• Fresh air can do wonders. Try ventilating your shelves from time to time. You can bring them outside on days when the sun is shining brightly.

• When storing things, make sure you pack them properly. If you are not using some books you can safely store them in stool bags.
